Two, Windows
OVERVIEW
Ever seen a photo online and thought: Is that expensive? Where do I get that? It happens to me all the time!
The image below from a listicle about lofts in Dwell Magazine. It features a tall, many-muntined window that floods the space with light. The old school factory-like muntin spacing adds detail and mirrors the scale of the bookshelf on the opposite wall. This detail provides a wonderfully warm counterpoint to modern aesthetic.
So...Is this window expensive? Where do I (have the contractor) get it?
In my working experience, one, as the architect, would draw this window into the set and have the contractor figure out the sourcing. But I've always had this theory...what if I source the window? The hypothesis is that:
- If I source the window, I will have access to more options. This is because I have time to call/email/meet with 20 window manufacturing companies and the contractor doesn't. The contractor will likely only have time to consult the three or so vendors they are used to using.
- I'll understand during the design process if a special feature like this is "worth it." If the window costs 10% above standard, then sure. If it's 200% above the standard, maybe we ditch it.
- I'll be able to optimize early on for other factors in addition to aesthetics like sustainability or lead time.
- Vendors are under-utilized. Do they really need a drawing from me? Do I need to sink an hour or more pouring through their catalog? Or can I just send a photo and say: do you have this?
- My design-brain-muscle will get a great work-out. This essentially is a mini-immersion project. Deep dive into the world of windows.
