# 011 Bouclé!

Bouclé!
Objects

I recently purchased this bouclé pillow and I want more of them! Time to dip my toes into the world of upholstery fabrication. I have a very specific color scheme in mind and the in-store offerings are not making it happen for me.

bouclé in American English

(buˈkleɪ ) or bouˈcle (buˈkleɪ ) noun. 1. a curly wool, silk, or cotton yarn that gives the knitted or woven fabric made from it a tufted or knotted texture.

Some fun design history: I didn’t know until taking on this project that bouclé is a quintessential mid-century modern fabric because it was invented for mid-century modern. In the late 1940s, Florence Knoll requested from designer Eero Saarinen that he create something extra cosy. Saarinen delivered the genius Womb Chair and invented bouclé to cover it.

For fabrication, I’ll be looking into

  1. Sourcing (where to find fabrics, are patterns available?)

  2. Pillow shapes

  3. Edge treatment

  4. Extras (e.g. zippers, trim)

  5. Boucle alternatives (I’ll be grouping 3 or 4 pillows so it’ll be key to mix it up)
